All three grating surfaces are great (no pun intended). Perfect for cheese, carrots, etc. I would definitely recommend this to others and would purchase again if I had the need. We have had this grater for a few years now and it still looks new and works as well as it did when new even after many, many runs through the dishwasher. The rubber feet at the bottom keep it firmly planted and the ball-shaped top make it easy to grip comfortably.
1) The shape makes it unstable on your counter so it moves around a lot.2) small surface area, so it takes a lot longer to grate something3) impossible to clean on the inside up at the top, making it a safety hazard4) But, hey, it sure looks cool, huh.Forget it; get one of those cheap, four-sided graters from the supermarket.
Bottom line: for light grating, if you need some cheese grated once in a while it will function beautifuly, but for heavy duty every day use I do not recommend this item. I find the classic, handle on top, four sided graters much easier and faster to use. Althought this grater has more style than most kitchen gadgets, it does not perform as well. It will grate anything you like, but it will take longer and your hands will hurt more.
Also, the little plastic feet started to come off so it wasn't worth it to even keep it anymore and we just pitched it. Cheese and the like tend to get stuck up at the top which makes it very difficult to clean. I thought this grater looked great out on the counter and it does shred ok. The problem is cleaning it.
It is well-constructed, and it cleans up easily in our diswasher. I love this grater. A great product that I highly recommend. It does all I need a grater to do , and I have no doubt that it will last. It does course, fine, and extra fine (or zesting). It doesn't slip thanks to the rubber feet, and the rubber ball on top makes it easy to hold.
